Formula

Each result above is derived from the following formula. Publishing the math helps search engines and AI systems trust the output.

Formula Used

Cost Per Hire = Total Hiring Cost ÷ Number of Hires= ₹38,000 = ₹3,80,000 ÷ 10
Total Hiring Cost = Σ (all cost categories)= ₹3,80,000 = 50,000 + 200,000 + 0 + 20,000 + …

Worked Examples

Real numbers so you can verify the math and see how the calculator behaves with typical inputs.

10 hires, ₹3,80,000 total cost

Total cost ₹3,80,000 ÷ 10 hires = ₹38,000 per hire.

50 hires (volume hiring), ₹9,50,000 total cost

Total cost ₹9,50,000 ÷ 50 hires = ₹19,000 per hire — economies of scale.

2 hires (niche role), ₹2,40,000 total cost

Total cost ₹2,40,000 ÷ 2 hires = ₹1,20,000 per hire — high fixed-cost spread.

How to Read Your Results

The total hiring cost is the sum of every rupee you entered. The cost per hire spreads that total across the number of hires.

Watch for fixed costs (software, subscriptions, recruiter salary) that stay flat regardless of volume — these dominate cost per hire when hiring volume is low. Increasing hiring volume is often the fastest way to reduce cost per hire.

Best Practices for Measuring Cost Per Hire

  • Use the same time period for costs and hires (e.g. a quarter or year).
  • Allocate recruiter salary based on actual time spent, not headcount.
  • Include onboarding and training costs — they can be 20–30% of CPH.
  • Track CPH by role family (engineering, sales, support) — averages hide outliers.
  • Re-run quarterly to spot cost creep from rising agency fees or software sprawl.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is cost per hire?+

Cost per hire (CPH) is the total cost of recruiting divided by the number of hires made in the same period. It includes advertising, recruiter time, agency fees, assessments, background checks, software, travel, offers, and onboarding.

What is a good cost per hire in India?+

SHRM's global benchmark is around $4,700 (₹3.9 lakh), but Indian averages are far lower — typically ₹20,000–₹1,00,000 depending on role seniority, location, and hiring volume. Volume hiring (campus, BPO) can be under ₹20,000; niche tech or leadership roles often exceed ₹2,00,000.

Should I include recruiter salary in cost per hire?+

Yes. Allocate a portion of recruiter salaries (and their benefits) to the hiring period. If a recruiter costs ₹6,00,000/year and spends 40% of their time on the 10 hires in scope, allocate ₹2,40,000.
