How Boolean Search Works

Boolean Search is a structured search technique using logical operators such as AND, OR, and NOT to narrow or broaden candidate searches.

It is used by recruiters to source candidates across search engines, professional networks, and resume databases. Instead of typing a single keyword, recruiters combine multiple terms into one query that reflects the actual hiring requirements.

A typical recruiter Boolean query combines a role, required skills, a location, an experience level, optional skills, and excluded keywords into a single readable string.

Standard Boolean Formula

  • Role AND Required Skills AND Location AND Experience AND Optional Skills NOT Excluded.
  • Required and Optional skills are joined with OR.
  • Excluded keywords are joined with NOT.
